What began as a sort of fascination with both the urban and heavy industry aesthetic soon led to more complex mixed media pieces focused on deconstructed portraits.
Numerous photos I’ve taken, along with my acrylic paintings of a few years ago have given way to more involved projects presented here. These are often defined by their dense, layered, collage-like compositions of cityscapes and deconstructed portraits.
Acrylic medium is used liberally to create cohesiveness, depth, and to inlay photo collage elements. Subtle hues or graphite shavings are often added to the medium and applied with brush or palette knife to create more texture and overall grittiness to the piece.
I enjoy playing with repetition, industrial elements, and the surreal in much of my work. I wanted to experiment with these themes to interpret how most of us are so caught up in, are a part of, consumption — products, information, resources, etc.
With market driven culture, spending power, and development reaching a near fever pitch state, it can be overwhelming to be part of this. One can often get a sense of the non-stop cycle of material goods sought after and accumulated, the resulting clutter and garbage produced, and, throughout all of this, self-identity partially lost... people buying the same things, using the same gadgets, living in the same industrialized environment.
Going hand in hand with consumerism is the addiction to devices like smartphones, and the resulting disconnect. Are we perpetrators or just the victims of this reality we find ourselves immersed in?
This reality is toyed with through detailed, heavily textured mixed media pieces which display a sort of organized chaos brought forth by underlying industry and technology. The distressed, slightly decayed look of some images seems to depict a breaking down of both the shoddy products and the end users’ individuality.
While this theme might sound like a dismal one, my work is still grounded in the pleasure and subtle playfulness in the fitting together of fragments, layers, line work, and hues... many of which hold a sort of retro appeal.
